광주국제교류센터

GIC Talk는 다양한 주제의 강좌를 통해 지역민과 거주 외국인이 상호 문화를 이해하고 소통하기 위한 공개강좌입니다. 2003년 9월 시작된 이 프로그램은 통역 없이 영어로 진행되며, 문화, 역사, 정치, 예술 등 다양한 주제로 강의가 이루어집니다.

내외국인 교류 공간

대부분 지역에 거주하는 외국인 혹은 영어가 가능한 내국인이 연사로 나서지만 때로는 주한외국대사, NGO 및 NPO 대표를 초청하는 특별한 시간도 마련되고 있습니다. 강의 후에는 참가자들끼리 자유롭게 의견을 교환할 수 있는 공간을 마련하여, 지역민들의 국제적 시민역량 강화와 함께 내·외국인간 문화소통 커뮤니티 조성 활성화를 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

재능기부와 자원활동으로 진행되는 강연

GIC Talk의 내·외국인 연사들은 강좌 사례비가 없음에도 불구하고 자신의 지식과 경험을 기꺼이 나누어 주고 있습니다. 또한 내·외국인 자원활동가들이 함께 자율적으로 연사 섭외부터 강좌 사회 및 진행, 연사 및 청중 응대, 사진과 동영상 기록 작업, 후기 작성까지 강좌 진행의 전 과정에 적극적으로 참여 활동하고 있습니다.

주제 : 경이로운 결과를 낳는 ‘다양성’

연사 : 박남식

자연은 매우 다양하기에 아름답습니다. 사회도 마찬가지로, 자연의 다양성에 못지않게 역동적입니다. 그렇기에 다양성은 자연과 사회의 아름다움의 밑바탕이 될 수 있고, 다양성은 지구상의 여행을 통해 우리가 경험하고 성취하는 ‘위대함의 샘’입니다. 흥미롭게도, 역사 속의 주요 문명은 다양한 종류의 포괄하며, 이를 바탕으로 만들어졌습니다. 오늘날의 초강대국인 미국이 좋은 예를 보여주고 있습니다. 미래를 위한 청사진에 사회문화적 다양성포괄성을 고려하는 중요한 가치를 두기를 바랍니다.

주제 : 환경을 보살피는 것 : 평범한 사람들이 어떻게 변화를 만들 수 있을까?

연사 : Michael Goonan

전라남도 거주자로서, 한국에서 가장 아름다운 지역 중 한 곳에 살고 있어 행운이라고 생각합니다. 이 강연에서는, 자연 환경을 돌봄으로써 우리 사회에 기여할 수 있는 방법을 공유할 것입니다. 이 강연의 핵심적인 질문은 ‘많은 관심을 받고, 때때로는 감당할 수 없이 거대해 보이는 이런 문제에 일반인들이 어떻게 영향을 미칠 수 있는가?’입니다. 이 강연을 통해서 쓰레기, 플라스틱 오염, 그리고 기후 변화 등의 주제와 함께, 한국의 유망한 지속가능한 미래의 조짐이 함께 논의될 것입니다.

주제 : 한국의 "BlackLivesMatter"운동

연사 : "Jason V Holmes, EJ Asare, Toni Cresell and BLM allies"

한국인과 아프리카계 미국인들은 시위를 통해 잔인한 억압에 맞서고 극복해 온 오랜 역사를 함께 공유하고 있습니다. 지금 이 순간에도 끊임없는 위험과, 매일을 걱정속에서 살아가는 미국의 가족과 친구들에게 사랑과 지지를 보냅니다.  그리고 우리는 모든 사람들이 #BlackLivesMatter 운동에 함께 동참해주기를 바랍니다.

GIC Talk is a weekly English talk program developed for intercultural communication and understanding among local Korean citizens with international residents in Gwangju. The program started in September 2003 with only a few participants. Nowadays, dozens of Koreans and international residents take part in the Talk Program, with focus concentrating on a different topic each week. These include world cultures, social issues, history, lifestyles, political issues, speakers' experience and other areas of interest.

Community Space for Koreans and International Residents

This community space for Koreans and international residents take place on weekends. Most presenters are international residents in Gwangju, but other influential people, such as international ambassadors and representatives of NGOs or NPOs, are also invited to give a talk. Each lecture is followed by a Q&A time where people can ask the presenter questions and exchange their ideas freely. The community space allows those who attend opportunities to be more globally aware.

Program Operation

Despite not having a program budget, GIC Talk is possible thanks to local and international residents sharing their time, knowledge, and experiences. Our appreciation also goes to GIC volunteers who host, document and review the event.

Title : Diversity works wonders

Speaker : Namsik Park

Society is as dynamic as nature is diverse and beautiful. Viewed in this way, diversity arguably is the wellspring of much of the greatness we experience and achieve. Interestingly, major civilizations in history have been built on the foundation of inclusiveness of various sorts. A good example is afforded by the predominant present-day superpower that is the United States.

Title : Caring for the environment: How ordinary people can make a difference.

Speaker : Michael Goonan

As residents of Jeollanamdo, we are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful parts of Korea. This talk is about sharing ways to serve our communities by caring for the natural environment. Topics (addressed) will include litter, plastics pollution, and climate change. Encouraging signs of a sustainable future for Korea will be discussed alongside areas for improvement.

Koreans and African Americans share a long history of struggling against and overcoming brutal oppression through protests and demonstrations. We want to show love and support for our family and friends in America, who are constantly in danger and we worry about daily. And we want all people to know that our #BlackLivesMatter.
